The surfer said he just encountered a shark ...an attempted attack,...that the shark had "thrashed" and was approaching him just as he caught a wave. The other guy said he observed it as well,...said it was about a 9-foot shark. Not many people were in the water...I was the only one in the area and was swimming right where the surfer had been about 10 minutes earlier (I hadn't noticed them when I entered the water probably because I had walked down the beach from my towel due to the side current...knowing I would drift back toward my towel).
The surfer was visibly and authentically distressed by the experience...still shaken up by what happened. He says he knew there was a group of sharks that CSULB had tagged but hadn't heard of any of them being aggressive (until now).
I thanked them for the warning, then I walked to my towel, then to the shower,& came back, and saw them trying to capture the attention of the lifeguard way down at the other end of the beach. I walked the other way and warned a few people about it. Then I left.
