I had a close call here on Labor Day 2023. Huge waves surf advisory. I normally do a snorkel swim from Big CDM over the little CDM and back. And if there's good waves over at little cdm I do a little bodysurfing before I return.
This was my second swim for the day. In the morning the waves were big as well but didn't seem to be so big - they were not a major challenge.
In the afternoon however I caught a wave coming into little CDM and lost one of my fins. This slowed me down cuz I was looking for my fin. Found my fin but by the time I did the next way was coming in and I had to do a duck 🦆 dive. Also had my snorkel and mask off in one hand and now I'm holding onto one of the fins as well, making it more difficult to swim with only one hand available.
Normally the big waves 🌊 come only a few two or three and then there's a break before the next set. But this seemed to be like a 10 or 12 wave set. They just kept coming and they were all big ones too. I'm not exaggerating. At first I was trying to go back OUT to get beyond the break. But with my hands full and only one fin I couldn't get out there.
Two or three more waves came over and I'm holding my breath. So I realize I need to go BACK IN TO THE BEACH. Three or four more waves come over my head and I'm getting tired and unable to hold my breath for long anymore.
By this time the lifeguard is starting to show some concern. He's standing on the beach but not in the water yet and he calls for the yellow boat to come. I think he could have come in the water a little bit earlier. He never actually did. The yellow boat arrived just as I was getting to the beach 🏖️
And I finally managed to scrape my way to shore literally VERY SHORT ON BREATH and holding onto my mask snorkel 🤿 & fin with both hands at this time. As I almost crawled onto shore I realized I had a crowd watching. It's kind of creepy because NOBODY shows any emotion- they just watch you like it's a TV show. Like you're on YouTube or something.
Would have been nice if somebody had said "Glad you made it. We were worried about you" or something. Needless to say I walked back to Big CDM to get my towel this time, for the first time ever.
Makes me appreciate being able to BREATHE again.

re Rat Beach, PV Redondo
The area below the club house used to be a good place to go snorkeling. I even saw a small shark here one time. But for some reason it's become so clogged with kelp it's almost impossible to swim through.
Not sure what happened but I hope it's something they can fix or will naturally fix itself.
As for the beach by The lifeguard stand that's a mixed bag of people- some of the sketchy people don't like the regular beach so sometimes they come here- so not always so great . A Latino family kept throwing the soccer ball at me while I was waiting for waves to body surf. Not sure what that was all about .
Also, I don't think they comb and groom the sand here like they do northward.
I only come here when I don't want to go up north & back to save a little gas

Um. People traveling the coastline pay huge gas ⛽ & other bills to keep their vehicle maintained, etc.... Many now in costly sprinter vans. Others in older vehicles. Some may park & enjoy a day here. These are NOT homeless people. These people are ALIVE - experiencing LIFE 😃.
If your sense of JUSTIFICATION comes from living in ONE PLACE your whole life in a home with a mortgage & taking one vacation every summer where you "properly" stay at a hotel or an RV park or campground , good for 👉 you 👈.
NOT everybody shares your definition of what is 'normal' or 'optimal' .
Myself as a Christian - I believe I will be ultimately judged NOT according to the trivial things I DID or DIDN'T do (I didn't get any parking tickets God , I didn't jay walk God, I only went too fast a few times God, I lived in a house with a mortgage all my life,etc) but the important things I DID or DIDN'T do according to the 10 commandments & other Biblical teachings ... & most importantly what I DID DO :
Did I try to reach others with the Gospel ? That's the best I can tell you in the space allotted.

Re Latinos at Newport Beach beach
I love Latinos but when they come to Newport beach too often they are very rude towards white people, almost like they hate white people. Please DON't hate on us. We love all Latinos 👍. Y'all are great hard working people & we know you have manners & values.
White people work hard too. We were NOT all born with silver spoons in our mouths. We enjoy the beach too. Please don't envy us. We are trying to make ends meet every day too.
Oh. I almost forgot. If you see a towel on the beach ⛱️ & nobody there it probably means they are in the water. They probably want to lie on their towel when they come out of the water. They probably don't want to be so close to you that they can touch you.
Therefore don't set up your stuff so close. Give each other space. Don't force the person coming out of the water to move their towel if they were there first. Does that make sense ?

I ENCOUNTERED A "KOOK" WHILE BODY SURFING @ REDONDO "10 Surf Terms You ABSOLUTELY Need To Know;) " Degree 33 Surfboards
I was happily body surfing all by myself at redondo beach when some Latino kid went out of his way to come out by me to body surf next to me when there was PLENTY of space up and down the beach to be alone...so he approached me and said, "THIS IS GNARLY" as if I spoke that kind of stupid surfing lingo..as if I was some dumb white boy who body surfs all day long with nothing better to do... as if he had watched a few too many old surf movies... WHO SAYS GNARLY ANYMORE ? AT least not me..and he DIDN'T even really know how to body surf.., there IS AN ART & SKILL to good body surfing..it's not just splashing in the waves.. to TRULY BODY SURF you know how to find the "SWEET SPOT" of a wave..just like in tennis.. they used to say a racquet has a "sweet spot" (maybe they still do, IDK)... BUT now I know what to call a person like this who PRETENDS to be a "surfing dude"...you call them 'KOOKS"
